Sunset Junction, In Layers

A walk west along Sunset Boulevard from Echo Park into Silver Lake.
Los Angeles, October 2026.

Sunset did not mark the transition.

I kept moving west from Echo Park and the city simply began arranging itself differently. The same boulevard. The same traffic, wires, storefronts and palms. But the balance between them had changed.

The street felt more edited. Businesses presented themselves more deliberately. The residential neighborhood pulled away from the sidewalk and climbed into the hills. Something was always visible above or behind what was directly in front of me.

These photographs follow that shift.

Some places reveal themselves through appearance. Others change once you know what happened there.

Silver Lake kept shifting between presentation and evidence.

A carefully composed storefront beneath utility lines. Weathered brick beside contemporary graphics. A historic facade continuing to participate in a neighborhood that has changed around it.

I was less interested in separating those layers than in watching what happened when they occupied the same frame.

At street level, Silver Lake felt like a negotiation between what it showed and what it kept just out of view.

Sunset carried the public version of the neighborhood. Above it, streets disappeared uphill and houses surfaced briefly between trees, buildings and power lines.

I left those hills for another walk.
